Gooseneck Barnacle (Pollicepes polymerus) on rock at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, Newport, Oregon. In mideval times it was thought that gooseneck barnacles transformed into barnacle geese, Branta leucopsis, because no one yet understood bird migration and didn't know where the geese went to reproduce. Thus, the "similar" looking barnacles attached to driftwood were thought to be baby geese in the process of maturing into birds. The common and scientific name of this crustacen reflect this history.

Gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) adult in a water treatment plant, Palo Alto, California. This fox was monitored by a local wildlife project investigating the territories and habits of a small urban gray fox population and the need for wildlife corridors for genetic diversity. Since this image was taken, the entire population of foxes in the area was wiped out by a canine distempter outbreak. Gray foxes are only recently starting to return to the area.
